Young Sheldon’s Iain Armitage Talks About Playing The 9 YO Version Of The Most Beloved Genius on Television

It’s not easy being a genius with zero tolerance for other people’s stupidity, both in real life and reel. I cannot vouch for an IRL genius like Stephen Hawking, but playing one on a TV show is definitely not child’s play. Or is it? Because 11-year-old Iain Armitage sure makes it look like a fun gig when he reprises the role of a young child prodigy on Young Sheldon!

The Big Bang Theory and its character, Dr Sheldon Cooper (played by the brilliant Jim Parsons) have become a beacon for all physics geeks and science nerds to fanboy over. On May 16, 2019, the beloved show ended its 12-season run with a heartwarming episode about Sheldon and Amy winning the Nobel Prize and Sheldon finally realising how his friends were truly amazing to put up with his crazy quirks all these years!

But while this was happening, a young boy of nine in Texas was listening to a radio broadcast in October 1990 of the Nobel Prize ceremony and dreaming of winning one himself someday. That’s how the makers of Big Bang and Young Sheldon, the adorable spin-off TBBT, beautifully married the two narratives, as if to tell fans, “Don’t worry that Big Bang Theory is ending. Smile because Young Sheldon is here and only just getting started!”

The show, which can be watched on Comedy Central India, has become much loved amongst the Indian fan base, including both adult fans of The Big Bang Theory and young ones who enjoy science and math as much as Sheldon does! And so we thought, how about picking the brains of the actor who plays one of the most beloved geniuses on television?
