“365 Days” (original title 365 Dni) is a Polish 18+ film directed by Barbara Białowas, based on the novel of the same name by Blanka Lipinska. Since airing on the online movie platform Netfix on June 7, the romantic drama has maintained its position among the top views in many countries such as the US, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. In Vietnam, up to now, “365 Days” leads the top 10 trends.

However, according to Forbes, the film does not attract customers because of its acting or attractive plot, but instead thanks to its violent sex scenes and the “fever” on the social networking site TikTok.

In reviews, “365 Days” is likened to the series 50 Shades of Gray (Vietnamese title: 50 shades) because there are too many explicit “bed” scenes and the story is conveyed problematically.

The film is about mafia boss Don Massimo Torricelli (Michele Morrone) who is obsessed with female director Laura Biel (Anna-Maria Sieklucka), then decides to kidnap her. He asked her to stay with him for 365 days. During this time, if she doesn’t love him, she can leave and vice versa. Since then, the audience has been inundated with segments depicting the lovemaking scenes of the main couple, from on the yacht to the window.

The film was considered no different from a porn film. The “hot” scenes are all extremely realistic, it feels like the actors are having real sex, exposing their bodies almost completely to the camera.

In addition, the film’s content is controversial on social networks because it tells about a kidnapping and subsequent sexual acts. According to the Observer, many online users criticized the film for romanticizing criminal behavior, as well as a forced relationship. Others believe that “365 Days” delves into the Stockholm Syndrome – a hostage develops feelings for the kidnapper.

Film critics and people who actually saw this work concluded that this is a terrible movie. The audience score for “365 Days” on Rotten Tomatoes (a famous movie review website) is 42%. Meanwhile, IMDb (an online database of world cinema) rated the film at an average of 3.8/10.

Variety’s film review reads: “The sex scene is the best in the movie, mostly because they don’t talk and they’re both very good-looking.”

Forbes asked: “Why does a movie with so many controversial issues and storylines top the list of Netflix’s most-watched movies?”.

The first reason is that the movie poster shows the male lead hugging the female lead from behind and both are naked. The audience is easily stimulated by such a sexually explicit image. However, Netflix statistics show that a part of the audience only watches a few minutes and then exits. Most likely, many people turned on it out of curiosity and turned it off immediately after realizing it was a terrible work.

In addition, “365 Days” also benefits a lot from the trend on TikTok. Accordingly, netizens rushed to post their own expressions when watching the “rain cloud” scene in the movie. IndieWire’s statistics on June 9 showed that the number of posts tagged #365days increased from 146.6 million to more than 183 million. Obviously, even with bad quality, “365 Days” is still a hit thanks to its rapid spread on social networks.
