The Office Follow-Up Would Likely Be a ‘Sister Series’ and Not a Reboot, Greg Daniels Reveals

Greg Daniels clarifies that the planned new take on The Office isn’t exactly a “reboot.”

While Greg Daniels might be revisiting The Office, it wouldn’t be to reimagine Michael Scott and his fellow employees at Dunder Mifflin with all-new actors in the roles.

While The Office itself was a reimagining of a British comedy series, the American version’s developer, Daniels, is making it clear that there are no plans to outright reboot the series again in the same fashion. This follows recent reports that a potential reboot of The Office would be moving forward with Daniels himself involved. Sharing a new update on the project, per TheWrap, Daniels said he doesn’t want to refer to the potential new show as a “reboot,” as it wouldn’t be simply doing the same thing with a different cast. He clarified that, if the show moves forward, it would most likely be set in the same world as The Office while focusing on all-new characters.

“I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot, you know what I mean? Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully,” Daniels explained. “The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

Teasing how the follow-up series would ideally be set in the same universe as the previous show, Daniels added, “The notion of maybe something like the way The Mandalorian is a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean? Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject. That, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don’t even know what you would call that. I don’t know if that’s like a sister show or something. I don’t know what the term is. But it doesn’t feel like ‘reboot’ would be the appropriate term for that.”

The Office, based on the British series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, was developed for NBC by Daniels. The American version was a big hit, ultimately running for nine seasons and winning several major awards along the way. Following the employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, the mockumentary series boasted an ensemble cast that included Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Leslie David Baker, Ed Helms, Creed Bratton, Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nuñez, Brian Baumgartner, Phyllis Smith, Craig Robinson, Mindy Kaling, B.J. Novak, Ellie Kemper, and Kate Flannery.

The Office can be streamed on Peacock.
