According to Cinema Blend, The Hunger Games franchise will soon return with a prequel this fall, called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

“The Hunger Games” prequel film
The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. This is the first project about the dark game world without the participation of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. Because, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set decades before the adventures of the “fire girl”.

The film revolves around the character Coriolanus Snow in his youth, who eventually became the president of Panem. At 18, Snow was chosen to mentor Lucy Grey Baird, a girl from the impoverished District 12 in The Hunger Games.

Director Francis Lawrence, who directed Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1 & 2, will return to helm this new story with a script by Oscar-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt.

Will Katniss Everdeen’s grandmother be revealed?
In Entertainment Weekly, director Francis Lawrence shared his thoughts on the characters in the prequel and how they relate to Katniss Everdeen.

“I think Maude Ivory is related to the great Everdeen character in everything,” he said.

This character is the cousin of Lucy Grey Baird, played by Rachel Zegler, who becomes a tribute from District 12 in The Hunger Games 10. In The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Maude Ivory is played by child actor Vaughan Reilly, who is around 8 or 9 years old.

Many fans of the novel believe that Lucy Grey Baird could be Katniss’ grandmother.

In the trailer for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, viewers can hear Zegler’s character singing The Hanging Tree, a song Katniss frequently uses in the series.

Francis Lawrence explains: “Lucy Grey Baird is a performer. After witnessing a man being hanged, she composed The Hanging Tree. Sixty-five years later, we hear Katniss singing this song, because it’s a song that’s been passed down through generations of District 12 people.”

As for Jennifer Lawrence, she said: “This is not a judgment. But Lucy Grey is the opposite of Katniss. She’s a musician, a performer, a charmer. Snow has never met a girl like her before.”

The Hunger Games franchise returns to the big screen after concluding the story of female protagonist Katniss Everdeen with Mockingjay Part 2 released eight years ago.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is scheduled to hit theaters on November 17, promising to bring audiences to a Panem that is both strange and familiar.
