A GoT Jon Snow spinoff is reportedly in the works, with the long-rumored Game of Thrones sequel series exploring his life after season 8’s finale. Game of Thrones‘ ending was divisive, to say the least, but it also appeared to be definitive. HBO has since put several Game of Thrones spinoffs into various stages of development, and they all seemed to fit this idea. Rather than sequels, HBO has been focused on developing prequels. House of the Dragon season 1 has finished, with season 2 on the way, set around 200 years before Jon Snow’s timeline.
Other reported spinoffs tackle events that take place well before the War of the Five Kings, battle with the Night King and White Walkers, and the rest of Game of Thrones‘ story — except for a spinoff focusing on Kit Harington’s Jon Snow. A Jon Snow spinoff happening is somewhat surprising but shows the continued reach of Game of Thrones and the need for streaming services to capitalize on well-established IPs as much as possible. Although the Game of Thrones spinoff show isn’t yet officially confirmed there are already a few details about the next chapter of Jon Snow’s story that have been revealed.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys Confirms The GoT Sequel Isn’t Greenlit Yet
The most recent news on the Game of Thrones Jon Snow spinoff arrived on November 6, 2023. HBO CEO Casey Bloys gave an update on the studio’s plans for future Game of Thrones spinoffs (as reported by TVLine). According to the initial report on Bloys’ comments, it seems that while scripts are in development as of late 2023, the Game of Thrones Jon Snow spinoff isn’t greenlit yet:
We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring. I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything, but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.
Going by Casey Bloys’ statement, the Game of Thrones sequel centered around Jon Snow is still some ways off despite being first teased in 2022. It seems that beyond the upcoming House of the Dragon season 2 the only Game of Thrones spinoff currently only the horizon is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. While some more positive Jon Snow spinoff news may arrive further down the line, there appears to be no plans for it to arrive on screens anytime soon.

Development On The GoT Sequel Series Hasn’t Officially Started Yet
In June 2022, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin confirmed via his blog that a Jon Snow spinoff was in development and that the series was pitched by Jon Snow actor Kit Harington himself. Martin stated he couldn’t reveal any of the writers or showrunners, but he did confirm that Harington brought in his own team and has signed on in a creative capacity.
HBO’s Casey Bloys seemingly revealed in 2023 that despite George R.R. Martin’s announcement, HBO hasn’t confirmed the Jon Snow spinoff yet.

Which Game Of Thrones Actors & Characters Will Return?
As part of the initial report on Game of Thrones‘ Jon Snow spinoff, it was revealed that Kit Harington would be returning. This makes sense, given it’d be very difficult to recast him. No one else is confirmed among the Jon Snow spinoff cast yet, but it could include Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane, since he was with Jon at the end of Game of Thrones as was Jon’s direwolf Ghost.
Former Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham addressed the idea of Davos returning for the Jon Snow spinoff and jokes that he sent Kit Harrington a message when the news was announced saying “Better Call Davos.” However, Cunningham insisted that, while he was open to the idea of returning, he has yet to be approached.

What Is The Game Of Thrones Spinoff About?
The most immediate challenge facing the Jon Snow spinoff is what the story will be. Jon’s Game of Thrones ending saw him going back beyond the Wall with the rest of the Wildlings. The Jon Snow sequel will have to find some new conflicts for the Wildlings, whether that’s a new threat emerging, or more internal affairs over leadership, and whether Jon becomes the King-Beyond-The-Wall like Mance Rayder. It’s possible that more of Westeros could be dragged into whatever happens, but the billing as a Jon Snow spinoff does suggest the story will be focused more on the lands north of the Wall.
