Scarlett Johansson devastated after losing role in ‘Gravity’

Losing her role in the movie “Gravity” made Scarlett Johansson question her place in Hollywood.

In an interview with Variety on May 9, the star said she lost hope in her career when she lost the role of Ryan Stone in Gravity to colleague Sandra Bullock. “I was rejected for two big roles in a row. First for Iron Man 2 and then for Gravity. I really wanted to get the role in Gravity but I failed,” Johansson said.

The above incident was the turning point that made her seriously consider her acting career. The 38-year-old star said: “I questioned myself whether I was pursuing the right career.”

According to IndieWire, in addition to Johansson, Marion Cotillard and Natalie Portman all participated in the casting of Gravity. However, in the end, director Alfonso Cuaron chose Sandra Bullock for the female lead role. Gravity revolves around the journey to hold on to life in space of mechanical engineer Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) after their ship is destroyed by a satellite debris. . The film grossed more than 700 million USD at the global box office and won seven Oscars at the 86th awards ceremony in 2014.

After the two works Lost in Translation (2003) and Girl With the Pearl Earring (2003) early in her career, Johansson was labeled a “sex bomb” by the media and received many invitations to participate in films with similar scripts. However, that is not in the direction of developing her acting path. The star’s career entered a new chapter in the mid-2010s when she made a splash in Under the Skin (2013) and Her (2013). “At that time, my inspiration for my career returned. I felt less worried and loved this job more,” Johansson told Variety.

In 2010, the star played Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) in Iron Man 2 and entered the Marvel universe after Emily Blunt left the project. The above role turned her into one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. Johansson appeared in a total of nine works of the superhero film company, including the solo film Black Widow (2021) about the background of the female spy. Black Widow grossed nearly $400 million globally and marked the last time Johansson played Natasha Romanoff.

This year, the actor returned to the big screen in Asteroid City directed by Wes Anderson. The film gathers stars like Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and Jason Schwartzmann, and is expected to be released on June 16.
