Kit Harington’s Jon Snow Update Proves GOT Sequel Concerns Wrong

Kit Harington has provided an update on Jon Snow after Game of Thrones, and it should serve to make his sequel show a more exciting prospect.

The Jon Snow sequel is more exciting after an update from Kit Harington about his character’s post-Game of Thrones state of mind. Harington is returning for the Jon Snow spinoff, which will pick up with his character after Game of Thrones’ ending where he went back beyond the Wall. Since there was seemingly no real set up for this spinoff, it is understandably the cause for skepticism and concern, especially with regard to what direction the character could go in after his journey wrapped up (one of the more well-received parts of Game of Thrones’ divisive finale).

It seemed like a happy-ish ending for Jon Snow, as he went back to the place he most truly belonged, but that’s not entirely the case. Harington has said that Jon Snow isn’t okay after Game of Thrones, and that he will “live out his life thinking about all of this trauma.” That’s something that could (and should) be explored in the spinoff, and the update should also help to alleviate some concerns about the idea of continuing on so directly from Game of Thrones’ ending.

Jon Snow’s Post-Game Of Thrones Trauma Is Good For A Sequel

Its story may not be fully clear, but getting into Jon Snow’s trauma would be a fascinating starting point for his sequel show. It would be too simplistic for him to pick up after Game of Thrones and not be massively be impacted by everything he went through. Even after he was killed, Jon Snow was resurrected and did nothing but fight: against Ramsay Bolton, the White Walkers, Cersei Lannister, and finally Daenerys Targaryen. He lost his family, the two women he loved, and, in being brought back from the dead and having to kill people he cared for (Olly, Dany), a little piece of himself as well.

For all that, the emotional and mental impact upon Jon Snow wasn’t really shown as he moved from fight to fight, which means there are new depths to show for the character. In particular, Game of Thrones’ ending happened so quickly after Jon killed Daenerys there was no chance to fully reckon with that decision, but it’s so monumental it deserves to be explored further. The same is true of all Jon’s losses, and it could allow for a greater, more poignant study of his character than Game of Thrones allowed.

What Will Jon Snow’s Sequel Be About?

The biggest question over Jon Snow’s sequel show is what the story will be. The White Walkers are gone, the Night’s Watch doesn’t really seem necessary, Westeros is ostensibly at peace, and with Jon back beyond the Wall there’s no obvious narrative to dive into. There are a few options, including new threats, whether that’s political unrest in Westeros or an emerging villain beyond the Wall. It could also, perhaps, be about division among the Wildlings, their fight to survive and adapt, and Jon finding his new place in the world.

It seems unlikely it will be as big as Game of Thrones – because it will presumably be contained to Jon Snow being North of the Wall, there’s less scope for a sprawling tale or too many epic battles. But that’s no bad thing:worked best when it was operating on a character level. A dark, introspective, emotional show with Jon Snow reflecting upon the ghosts of his past (alongside the Ghost of his present), the loves and losses, and all he’s been through and trying to find a way to go on and create a new life that allows him peace and happiness could be powerful. Harington’s update on Jon’s trauma only makes that more likely.
