INTERVIEW WITH JENNIFER LAWRENCE: “MY LIFE IS MEASURED BY MY WORK EFFORTS”

Jennifer Lawrence has played many roles on screen. If someone were to make a movie about her, J.Law’s life would also be full of interesting colors.

In the movie Joy, after exposing a partner’s trick, Jennifer Lawrence’s character Joy Mangano walks out of a hotel with black glasses, wavy bob hair, a black leather jacket and a nonchalant look. At that moment, Joy has no idea that she is about to buy the entire building she just passed, nor does she know that she will become the president of an extremely famous retail corporation. She just keeps going, doing what she loves, doing what needs to be done.

Likewise, the moment Jennifer Lawrence – a Kentucky girl who came to New York to seek opportunities in a slum, she never expected that one day she would sign important contracts in luxury hotels or the day she owned a 5-bedroom house worth more than 7 million USD in Beverly Hills would come so quickly.

The day Harper’s Bazaar met Jennifer Lawrence, the meeting took place at the Greenwich Hotel in New York owned by Robert De Niro – who co-starred with Jennifer Lawrence in all three films by director David O. Russell: Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and most recently Joy. Lawrence was still as open-minded and comfortable as if she were the owner of the hotel. You can imagine Jennifer Lawrence sitting comfortably on the sofa, her little dog Pippi running around the room.

Knowing Jennifer Lawrence’s terrible talkativeness, the reporter made a rather challenging suggestion: “I think we should start quietly.” Of course, J.Law jumped up: “No. This makes me want to talk more than anything. There are thousands of words pouring out, flooding my head.” And so the conversation moves from one topic to another without stopping.

A day off the set
If the life of “the woman named joy” is vividly told on screen with simple everyday details, then the life of the woman named J.Law cannot lack peaceful corners.

A script about her life, surely cannot ignore the bustling dinners she experiences with Adele, Emma Stone and other close friends such as Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham. However, J. Law is not a party girl but a nana – a grandmother, extremely lunar – as she claims. “I rarely leave the house late. I am lazy. I am a grandmother. If I have to leave the house late to go to a party, I will definitely throw up.” And at one of those parties, J. Law threw up all over the room, broke the candles, and didn’t bother to clean up after herself “because I’m a monster.” She’s the type of person who’s willing to make a mistake or two and sometimes speaks quite “salty.”

J. Law says she doesn’t appear in the media much, unless she’s promoting a movie: “I want people to know less about me.” Instead, her life is measured by her efforts at work.

If she’s not working that day, J. Law wakes up, walks her dog Pippi. Maybe does Pilates or something. Then she goes out with friends to count down her free time, or what she calls her “waste time.” Then J. Law watches TV and goes to bed. “That’s my day,” J. Law says.

Each film has a melody
Returning to the story of writing the script for Jennifer Lawrence, of course you cannot ignore the huge mark of director David O. Russell. This actor-director duo brought her three Oscar nominations and a golden statuette for her role as Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook.

Although they worked together so well, J. Law also struggled many times when, even while she was sleeping on the plane, the director put headphones in her ears to help her absorb a suitable song for the upcoming scene. J. Law argued: “I don’t want to listen to this song. I understand this movie.”
