Fuller House: Why Stephanie Dated (& Married) Jimmy

Fuller House: Why Stephanie Dated (& Married) Jimmy

Everybody was surprised when Stephanie started dating Kimmy Gibbler’s brother, Jimmy in Fuller House, but in hindsight, their relationship makes sense.

Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) dated and eventually married Kimmy’s brother, Jimmy (Adam Hagenbuch), in Fuller House. While the Full House spinoff’s main character was DJ (Candace Cameron-Bure), the show gave her younger sister her own arc as well. Moving in after DJ’s husband tragically died, Stephanie walked away from her gig as a party DJ, which had her touring around the world and mingling with high profile celebrities, for a more simple life in San Francisco.

Initially, Stephanie was skeptical about moving in back with her sister; she was excited to go back to her old globe-trotting life. However, after realizing how much help DJ would need to raise her three sons, she changed her mind, and together with their long-time friend and neighbor, Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber), they settled into the Tanner family home. Fuller House‘s premise is almost identical to that of Full House, with Stephanie’s arc mirroring Jesse’s (John Stamos) – and just like her uncle, she, too, was given her personal character journey which was ramped up with the debut of Jimmy Gibbler.

Admittedly, Jimmy’s existence was a surprise to a lot of Full House fans who were keeping up with the Netflix spinoff. There was no mention of him in the original show, although Kimmy talked about having other siblings. Nevertheless, Fuller House made sure that he was unmistakably a Gibbler. Like his sister, he could be slow and dull; he also had the same eccentricities as Kimmy. Considering how Stephanie hated DJ’s best friend because of all those qualities, it’s puzzling how she ended up with Jimmy.

Stephanie’s decision to date and eventually marry Jimmy may seem anomalous on the surface, but actually it makes sense. The primary reason Stephanie hated Kimmy in Full House was because she could be obnoxious; she didn’t have any problems embracing the fact that she wasn’t the brightest and was actually unbothered by people’s opinion of her. While DJ didn’t mind this about Kimmy, the second Tanner sister was irked by it, especially since Kimmy liked to pick on her simply because she was older. Jimmy, on the other hand, may also be dull – arguably even duller than his sister, but he was never cocky. He was mild-mannered and gentle, and while he had a lot of questionable remarks and actions, to Stephanie he was so much more tolerable than Kimmy.

So instead of coming off as an annoying fool, Stephanie saw Jimmy as an adorable d

ork like a kid, and being associated with him also helped with her personal insecurity with DJ. Between the sisters, DJ has always been depicted as the responsible one, while Stephanie was typically rowdy and problematic. Fuller House played this dynamic in season 5’s Thanksgiving episode, “Cold Turkey”, where DJ was skeptical about Stephanie preparing their Thanksgiving feast – so much so that she went and cooked a back-up meal, fully anticipating that her sister’s failings.

When Stephanie was with Jimmy, however, she felt like the adult in the relationship, which technically is the case. After she met him, the path she wanted to take in her life became clearer; she even reconsidered other options to have her baby after she was informed of the possibility she couldn’t bear children. While Stephanie’s reason for being drawn to Jimmy may not be the most romantic, the pair was genuinely in love with each other – both of them striving to be better parents to Danielle and their second born. At the end of Fuller House, it was revealed that Stephanie was expecting, to everyone’s delight.
