“Fuller House Series Finale: Exploring the Proliferation of Exes and its Significance”

Candace Cameron-Bure explains why there were a lot of exes during Fuller House’s triple wedding finale. After the first nine episodes of the farewell season ended with Steve’s (Scott Weinger) surprise proposal to DJ, it was clear that the sitcom would end with all three main female leads tying the knot. Lo and behold, much of the back half of the year was devoted to planning the occasion with the final episode reserved for the event itself. As it was Full House’s spinoff send-off, Netflix brought back some surprise cameos – most of them are former lovers of the original cast.

An unexpected string of unfortunate events forced DJ, Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), and Kimmy (Andrea Barber) to host their wedding in the Tanner family’s backyard. It’s perfect for the occasion considering that it’s a relatively small gathering with mostly family and friends. What’s interesting, however, is that there few of the attendees who once dated a member of the Fuller House core cast – the majority of them used to go out with those tying the knot that day like CJ (Virginia Williams), Duane (Scott Menville), and Viper (David Lipper). Some fans found that weird, but Cameron-Bure thinks it’s actually a good thing.

Speaking with Insider about all things Fuller House finale, the Cameron-Bure, who also served as a producer in the Netflix offshoot says that having exes in the wedding proves that former lovers can get along. The actress adds that it’s a positive message that the show wants to propagate.

“I think that is a message within our show, that we can still all be friends. Things might not have worked out the way that we intended them to originally, but everyone gets along and everyone supports each other. That in itself is such a positive message when it’s not the normal message.”

Aside from the message, bringing these characters was also a way to pack surprises in the finale. Since the wedding was pretty much set to be Fuller House’s endgame, the show creatives had to come up with some unexpected elements in the last episode, otherwise, it would be somewhat disappointing for a show finale. The problem with this is that some of these cameos didn’t really make sense. It’s understandable that Matt (John Brotherton) was there since he continues to be business partners with DJ, and so is Vicky (Gail Edwards) given that she’s Danny’s (Bob Saget) ex. Other than them, however, the rest’s inclusion is questionable. For starters, Duane and Viper didn’t stay connected with DJ and Kimmy after their respective break-ups back in Full House, so why were they invited?

Out of all the exes, however, potentially the most problematic is CJ’s attendance. Considering what went down between her and Steve in their almost-wedding in Japan, it’s uncomfortable seeing her excitedly attending her ex-fiancĂ©’s wedding to the woman he ditched her at the altar for. Granted that CJ and DJ had patched things up, it’s still weird that they’ve seemingly moved on from that whole snafu as it wasn’t a big deal.

What makes these Fuller House cameos worse is that it means that the Tanners were able to invite all of them but not Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen). The youngest sister’s absence was barely mentioned in the show’s final nine episodes – in fact, there’s not any word about DJ and Stephanie trying to invite her to their wedding. Perhaps all these surprise appearances would’ve worked better if they made an effort to explain why the cameo fans had all been waiting for isn’t happening.
