Full House’s Cast Is Right: Another Reboot Should Happen

The Full House cast wants to do another reboot, despite Bob Saget’s recent death, and they’re right: they need to do a Fuller House follow-up.

Full House should get another reboot after Fuller House. The late-’80s/early-’90s family sitcom had a renaissance in 2016 when Netflix premiered Fuller House, the sequel-reboot of Full House. It ran for five years until it wrapped up in 2020. Almost two years since it ended, the Full House cast, following Bob Saget’s death, has expressed their intent in making another revival.

Wanting to lean on nostalgia, the original series creator Jeff Franklin, who returned for the offshoot after exiting Full House years before it ended, Fuller House essentially copied the premise of its predecessor. Like her dad, Danny (Bob Saget), DJ finds herself in the same predicament: suddenly widowed and left to raise three young kids on her own after her husband suddenly died in the line of duty as a firefighter. This motivated Stephanie (Jodie Sweeting) and Kimmy (Andrea Barber), like Jesse (John Stamos) and Joey (Dave Coulier), to move into the iconic San Francisco home to help the eldest Tanner child to raise her sons.

Unfortunately, Fuller House failed to resonate the same way its parent series did. The spin-off barely focused on the parenting aspect of its narrative and devoted much of its time on DJ’s love life in particular. This in itself is enough for Full House to be revived again. In an already chaotic world, an earnest and heartwarming show like the family sitcom is something that a lot of people continue to yearn for. Instead of focusing on the adults’ lives in the potential second revival, it should be about the family’s dynamic, particularly the parent-child dynamic. Fans know that the recent passing of Saget may hinder plans for another Full House renaissance, but as Cameron-Bure, Coulier, and Barber unanimously said that the Danny Tanner actor would be happy to see them all back together, especially since that’s what he always wanted. Doing a brand new Full House spin-off on the heels of his death allows the franchise to honor his legacy in front and behind the camera.

As the Tanner patriarch, Danny broke stereotypes of what a father should be, especially when Full House first came out in the late-’80s. Instead of being brusque and cold, he was warm and loving. He was open about articulating how much he cared about his kids and friends, which is a reflection of what he was in real life. That being said, Danny was also reasonably stern: he knew how to discipline his girls without going overboard. Jesse and Joey were instrumental in raising DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle, but it was Danny who held the whole family together following the tragic death of his wife, Pam. If Fuller House gets a follow-up, it should highlight how much he impacted the lives of his extended family. This would be the greatest way to celebrate Saget while also making amends for the lapses in the narrative of Fuller House. For what it’s worth, the fact that the cast is unanimous in wanting to do another Full House offshoot despite the demise of their co-star means it would be easy to bring them all back for the possible project.
