Everything We Know About the Upcoming Young Sheldon Spinoff

Sheldon Cooper’s story may be coming to a close, but for the other Cooper family members like Georgie and Mandy, their stories have only just begun.

Spinoffs are all the rage in the world of television. There have been spinoffs of television shows, movies, and video games, and now there are even spinoffs of spinoffs.Young Sheldon is a prequel series to the highly successful sitcom The Big Bang Theory, and is now receiving the spinoff treatment with a sequel series focusing on Sheldon Cooper’s older brother Georgie and Mandy McAllister. Despite George and Mary’s messy marriage being filled with emotional infidelity and near physical affairs, Georgie and Mandy’s relationship remains the most controversial.

The engaged couple are in a good place in their lives right now, with Mandy reconciling with her parents and raising her daughter CeCe with Georgie. Of course, this wasn’t always the case. Their relationship started off with Georgie lying about his age and manipulating Mandy to believe that Georgie is much older than he let on. Upon learning they have an 11-year age difference, the couple endure a slow-burn romance throughout Mandy’s pregnancy. With Young Sheldon coming to an end, someone’s going to have to fill the gigantic hole Sheldon Cooper is leaving behind as he heads to Caltech. It’s only right that Georgie and Mandy will fill it thanks to the chaotic future they have ahead of them.

Who Will Return in the Young Sheldon Spinoff?

As a multi-camera comedy without a laughing track, the untitled spinoff was created by The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Holland and Steven Molaro. Being the leads of the Young Sheldon spinoff, it seems obvious that Montana Jordan and Emily Osment will return as Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister, respectively. Their daughter, Constance “CeCe” Cooper, is currently a baby on Young Sheldon, so it’s unclear if there will be a time jump to when she’s older. Since the spinoff is heading on the fast track to air during CBS’s 2024-2025 broadcast season, there’s good reason to believe that casting news will start sprinkling in sooner than later.

As of March 2024, there’s no word if any other cast members of Young Sheldon such as Iain Armitage will return to the spinoff. Over the course of Young Sheldon‘s seven seasons, fans have grown to love the cast as the dysfunctional, yet affectionate Cooper family. So much so that it appears Young Sheldon retconned Sheldon’s memory of George Cooper having an affair. Sheldon actually walked in on his parents experimenting in the bedroom, which may be in response to the audience’s adoration of George as a father. But considering George’s death is a rock-solid piece of canon in The Big Bang Theory, Lance Barber is less likely to return than any other cast member.

One cast member has evidently confirmed they won’t be returning to the spinoff: Reagan Revord as Missy Cooper, Sheldon’s twin sister. The actor responded to a fan’s comment on Instagram that she wasn’t invited to the spinoff, but will be cheering on her on-screen brother nonetheless. Fans shouldn’t get disheartened by this casting news, however. If the series does well enough, there’s always a chance Revord and other members of the Cooper family could appear in the future.

What Is the Young Sheldon Spinoff About?

Since the spinoff is still early in development, not much has been revealed in regard to plot details. CBS’s plan is to continue the story of the Cooper family through Georgie and Mandy as they raise their daughter CeCe in Texas. As a young family, the couple will have to face challenges in relation to marriage, parenting and adulthood, all while settling down in a Christian and conservative neighborhood. While CBS is staying quiet about the details, The Big Bang Theory can already predict what’s ahead for the newlyweds.

In the future, Georgie has become something of a womanizer. He’s gone through multiple divorces, had several girlfriends and can never find the “one” to settle down with. All of his failed relationships point back to his noncommittal issues, which is a drastic change from how Young Sheldon portrayed the young romantic. Georgie falls in love pretty easily with women, but he rarely moves on quickly. Once he’s committed to someone like Mandy or his former girlfriend Amber, he goes through hell or high water to show his dedication. Compared to the bachelor he is in the future, his failed relationship with Mandy might be the catalyst for his playboy lifestyle.

Young Sheldon wasn’t afraid to dip into tragedy, and the spinoff may be heading in a similar direction. Georgie and Mandy canonically break up in the future, so the spinoff could be the events leading up to it. It’ll be an interesting departure from the usual, “happy-go-lucky” sitcom formula where nothing terrible permanently alters the family dynamic forever. The spinoff could even take a giant risk of splitting the couple up early on, and reconstructing the story around a divorced couple navigating the perils of co-parenting.

How Will Young Sheldon Set Up the Georgie and Mandy Spinoff?

Young Sheldon still has some time before the seventh season draws the series to a close. There are plenty of episodes left that’ll properly set up the spinoff featuring Georgie and Mandy, but the seeds have already been planted for what the couple have in store. Mandy and Georgie have a long way to go if they want to walk down the aisle, and they don’t appear to be in any rush right now. They’re still trying to find a home for their family after a tornado struck town, and are still adjusting to living with the rest of the Coopers now that Mary and Sheldon have returned home from Germany.

They might even be facing some financial troubles down the road now that Connie has taken the bold jump of adding a poker table to her and Georgie’s shared gambling business, which is adding another illegal layer that could land him in jail. It’s an understatement to say that these two don’t have their lives straightened out yet. There’s also the matter of the massive age difference between the two. While this problem is a ship that sailed long ago, Mandy is still 11 years older than the 18-year-old Georgie. Sooner or later, they’re going to run into unbeatable obstacles due to their differing life experiences.

Georgie had to practically beg Mandy to marry him, which is never a good start to any engagement. On a brighter note, Young Sheldon has already pushed Georgie toward his career in the tire industry, seeing that Mandy’s father owns a tire store. Georgie and his future father-in-law, Jim, already have a mutually respectful relationship that George has shown hints of jealousy of. As the spinoff picks up during the aftermath of George’s death, Jim could be a crucial supporting character to play a paternal role in Georgie’s life. It appears that, either way, the Georgie and Mandy spinoff won’t be as lighthearted as The Big Bang Theory or Young Sheldon were before, breaking new ground for the sitcom genre.
