Charles Shaughnessy On Outside Salem
Soap Hub chats with Charles Shaughnessy about his involvement in the streaming series and why Beyond Salem will feel familiar to longtime DAYS viewers, why superhero couple Shane and Kim (Patsy Pease ) is still so popular, etc.

Soap Hub: Shane brings such charm to this story. Even when he’s not on canvas, DAYS fans know Shane is out there keeping the world safe!
Charles Shaughnessy: That’s right. I think this story is a return to the – what I call – ‘caper’ plots of the 1980s. Our large group of brave heroes travel the world to stop the bad guys. I think they felt it was the Golden Age of DAYS. Back then soaps were firing on all cylinders. They’re thinking, ‘Let’s bring that back.’

People have said to me for years, ‘Doing The Nanny must be fun’ – and it’s the most fun job I’ve ever had doing DAYS. It’s like being in a performance company. You get very close to the cast. You rely on each other and you get to know each other. I’m happy to [return to DAYS] anytime if they make it into the right story.

Charles Shaughnessy, known to most for his roles on The Nanny and Mad Men, is starring in Stage West’s current production of Game Show.

Shane and Kim are by far a fan favorite duo. What was the DAYS era like in the 1980s? The show turns out one couple after another.
I’ve been working as Hope’s [Kristian Alfonso] housekeeper for a few days. Patsy has been active for a while. They included her in various scenes with potential love interests. They’re like little test runs within the episodes. Manufacturers will see how it works. One day, they thought, “Let’s put Shane and Kim together.” They come up with the idea of Shane spying on Kim through her apartment window.

I remember we went to Knott’s Berry Farm to take photos of the location. They invited some members of the public to appear as [additional characters]. They introduced the actors on the remote to everyone and when they came to see Patsy and I, I remember the place was buzzing. The producers thought, ‘Oh, this is fun.’ I think that’s when we crossed the line into being a super classy couple.

Shane discovered Kim’s abuse by her uncle Eric and fell in love with her and a romance was born. What a great era of the show.
It was a golden age. We sped up the plot and the romances were amazing. The show knows what it’s doing with candles and music. Characters have scary secrets. They feel that if those secrets come out, everything will explode. The audience knows what those secrets are but the other characters do not.
