Dave Coulier’s Reason For Not Watching Full House Reveals A Joey Problem

Dave Coulier reveals that he hasn’t seen a complete Full House episode which highlights a big problem with how Joey was used in the show.

Dave Coulier hasn’t watched a full episode of Full House and the reason exposes a big problem about Joey. The family sitcom from the late ’80s and early ’90s highlighted the highs and lows of parenting. The events of Full House were kicked off by a tragedy when Danny Tanner was suddenly forced to raise three young daughters after the unexpected death of his wife. Luckily for him, he got help from his brother-in-law, Jesse Katsopolis, and best friend, Joey — both single men who moved in with the Tanners to keep an eye on the girls.

Aside from their primary role of taking care of the girls, the three men of Full House also had their arcs. Danny was the strict but loving father while Jesse was the cool uncle. Joey, on the other hand, was the jokester — a stand-up comic who did open mics and at one point, even hosted his own children’s show. While he wasn’t blood-related to the Tanners, he was never treated like anything but a family member. However, the fact that the actor who portrays him, Dave Coulier, hasn’t seen a full episode of the show actually highlights a problem with the character.

Joey Was Used Mostly For Comedic Purposes In Full House

Despite being an integral part of the sitcom, Coulier says that he hasn’t seen a complete Full House episode ever. He explains that this decision has something to do with how his kids view that family comedy. His son says that Joey does a lot of stupid things in the show, so they stopped watching altogether. While Coulier plays off the comment as humorous, it effectively highlights that he mainly functioned as a punchline for both Full House and even Fuller House. Instead of having a substantial arc, Joey was primarily utilized for comedic purposes, and in the process, the shows made him look stupid.

Joey did have some minor character developments, but most of his significant storylines in Full House involved being partnered up with Jesse. Since Stamos’ character had the image of the cool and suave single man who had a soft spot for kids, Joey was often shown as dense and slow to further highlight his difference from Jesse. In Fuller House, while all the older characters in the series had stable lives, Joey was given a rowdy family that even the perpetually-accepting Tanners cannot stand.

Joey Is More Important To Full House Than You Think

While the Tanner household wasn’t traditional in the sense that there’s no maternal figure, each of the three adults played an important role in raising DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle (alternately played by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen). They offered something of importance to Full House’s storytelling that made it the cult family sitcom that is now regarded as. Joey proves that family doesn’t always mean that someone is related by blood. Sometimes, they come in other forms, like a devoted and loyal friend which is what he was in both series. If anything, his arc in Full House paved the way for Kimmy Gibbler’s role in Fuller House.
