Although Young Sheldon ended after Season 7, the Big Bang Theory universe is not over just yet. Chuck Lorre, the creator of both series, announced in April 2023 that a new show set in the Big Bang Theory world is in the works, and that series is now confirmed to be a Young Sheldon spinoff based on two popular characters. What is Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage about and who will star in the Young Sheldon spinoff? Keep reading to find out.

Young Sheldon is a prequel series to the hit show The Big Bang Theory. It follows Sheldon Cooper, a child genius, as he grows up in East Texas in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The coming-of-age sitcom premiered on CBS in September 2017 and has been renewed for its seventh and final season, which will premiere in February 2024. Jim Parson, who portrayed the adult Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, narrates the series and serves as executive producer.

The series stars Iain Armitage as a young Sheldon; Lance Barber as high school football coach George Cooper, who doesn’t know what to do with his son; Zoe Perry as Sheldon’s protective mother Mary Cooper; Reagan Revord as Sheldon’s twin sister Missy Cooper; Montana Jordan as Georgie Cooper, Sheldon’s bad-boy big brother; and Annie Potts as MeeMaw, Sheldon’s grandma. Emily Osment joined the cast in Season 5 as recurring character Mandy McAllister

The show went on to become as successful as its parent series, averaging 7.5 million viewers during its sixth season, according to the LA Times. While fans were sad to hear the it had been canceled, we have good news: A Young Sheldon spinoff is coming to CBS this fall. Find out more about Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage below and see which characters are returning for the new series.

What is Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage about?

Variety confirmed in January 2024 that a Young Sheldon spinoff, titled Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, was in the works centered on Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister.

Georgie is the older brother of Sheldon and Missy Cooper. Montana Jordan, who plays Georgie, and Emily Osment, who plays Mandy, are reprising their roles in the spinoff. The series will also be a multi-camera comedy — similar to The Big Bang Theory — unlike the single-camera Young Sheldon.

CBS also released the first teaser for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage in May 2024. “I’m excited about this new journey,” Jordan said in the video. “I’m grateful we get to continue these characters and continue this. I think it’s going to be really fun,” Osment added. The preview showed Jordan surprising Mandy with a car, as well as a clip of them driving together, as George tells Mandy, “Georgie and Mandy Cooper. I’ll go to a barbecue at their house.”

In March 2024, CBS gave the spinoff a straight-to-series order. Per the official logline, it will follow Mandy and Georgie as “they raise their young family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting and marriage.” Young Sheldon co-creators Steven Molaro and Chuck Lorre are executive producing and writing the series, along with The Big Bang Theory veteran Steve Holland. It will premiere on CBS this fall as part of the 2024-25 broadcast season.

“From The Big Bang Theory to Young Sheldon, the world of the Cooper family has been incredibly special to us. We’re very excited to continue their stories through the eyes of Georgie and Mandy,” the EPs said in a statement.

Lorre had previously teased the new series during a November 2023 interview with TV Line. “It’s prenatal … Yeah, you don’t talk about the birth until the second trimester, I believe, is the rule,” he told the outlet. “That’s a long way of saying no, I’ve got nothing to say about it other than it’s something that we are discussing.”

Young Sheldon Season 7 saw Mandy and Georgie get married. However, in the flagship series, fans know that the couple are no longer together. The new series will likely bridge that gap and give viewers a better look at their relationship.

Who’s in the Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage cast?

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will be led by Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, who will play Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister, respectively. The cast will also include Will Sasso and Rachael Baby Jones, who play Mandy’s parents, Jim McAllister and Audrey McAllister, respectively. All cast members have recurred on Young Sheldon.

Executive producer Steve Holland told TVLine in May 2024 that there’s a chance other Young Sheldon stars could also appear in the spinoff. “I think, certainly, the characters in the world of Young Sheldon still exist in this world,” Holland said. “They’re still around and can make appearances and drop by.”

Two months later, our sister site Variety confirmed that Zoe Perry will reprise her role as Mary Cooper, Georgie’s mom, for a guest appearance, along with Annie Potts as his Meemaw and Raegan Revord as his little sister Missy Cooper.

It is still unclear if Iain Armitage will appear as Sheldon, but he’s certainly up for it. “If I got a call to go back, that’d be so much fun. I’d be honored to,” he said, noting: “I’m also just excited to get to sit back on my couch with some popcorn and watch their show because they’re so good. But I could totally see myself getting in the khakis again, putting on the old penny loafers and bow tie, and going back out on the job.”

He continued, “It’s going to be so fun to see. Montana and Miss Emily are both so funny and so talented, and they play off each other so well. They’re very contrasting characters… and I love them together so much.”

When does Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage premiere?

The series will premiere on Oct. 17, 2024, as a part of CBS’ fall 2024 schedule. It will then lead Thursday nights, airing before Ghosts, Elsbeth and the new series Matlock. See CBS full fall lineup here.
