Young Sheldon Spinoff Series Announced Ahead of Final Season

Per Deadline, it’s been revealed that CBS is finalizing a deal for a direct-to-series order for a new series set in the world of The Big Bang Theory. It will be a direct spinoff to Young Sheldon, as it will focus directly on Sheldon’s brother Georgie Cooper (Montana Jordan) and his fiancé Mandy McAllister (Emily Osment). Also reported is that the spinoff will be shot as a multi-camera series, returning to the format utilized by The Big Bang Theory before converting to a single-camera set-up for Young Sheldon. Executive producers Steve Holland, Steve Molaro, and Chuck Lorre are also teaming back up for the Young Sheldon spinoff with plans to co-write the pilot episode.

The reported plan is for Jordan and Osment to reprise their Young Sheldon roles as Georgie and Mandy. Jordan had been a part of Young Sheldon since its first season, while Osment was introduced as Mandy in Season 5. Their storyline saw the two become romantically involved after 17-year-old Georgie lied about his age to Mandy, who was nearly 30. When the truth was revealed, Mandy was pregnant, and the two have since had their child. They wound up getting engaged in the Season 6 finale.

Another Big Bang Theory Spinoff Is Planned at Max
The new Young Sheldon spinoff is not the only series in the planning stages meant to further expand upon the Big Bang Theory universe. In 2023, it was reported that Chuck Lorre was partnering up with Warner Bros. Television and Max to create a new Big Bang Theory spinoff. No plot details have yet been revealed, and it remains unclear which characters from the original series might return for the new show. The new Deadline report noted how the Young Sheldon spinoff is completely separate from the previously announced Big Bang Theory follow-up.

The Big Bang Theory, which followed a group of friends living in a California apartment building, aired for twelve seasons between 2007 and 2019. Its first spinoff, Young Sheldon, premiered on CBS in 2017. It will be concluding with its upcoming seventh and final season, but with the series still popular with fans, it’s no surprise to see another show quickly going into development.

The Young Sheldon spinoff is eyeing a 13-episode order for the 2024-25 season. Meanwhile, the final season of Young Sheldon will premiere on CBS on Feb. 15, 2024.
