House of the Dragon – What you need to know about the Game of Thrones prequel

Let’s take a look with Moveek at what you need to know about the prequel House of the Dragon.

As we know, HBO has developed many prequel series for Game of Thrones, but the first film that will air on the big screen is House of the Dragon, revolving around the Targaryen family. Author George R.R. Martin of A Song of Ice and Fire shared: “House of the Dragon has been in development for many years (though the title has changed many times along the way). This was actually the first idea I sent to HBO when we started talking about the next series in the summer of 2016.”

Content

Set 300 years before the main events in Game of Thrones, the series House of the Dragon revolves around the chaotic period of the Targaryen family when two sisters confront each other and bring with them the dragons. Of course it’s all aimed at one goal: who will rule the Iron Throne. Martin once shared on his personal blog:

“If you want to know a little about the upcoming series… well, I can’t reveal everything, but you might want to read the two book series I wrote with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women and Rogues, followed by The History of Archmaester Gyldayn in Fire & Blood.”

Dangerous Women revolves around the harsh civil war in Westeros, taking place nearly 2 centuries before the events in A Game of Thrones. And Rogues explores the life, adventures, mistakes and marriage of Prince Daemon Targaryen. Fire & Blood released in November 2018 is the first novel consisting of 2 parts of the history of the Targaryen family in Westeros. Below is the description of the book:

“Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen – the only dragon family to survive the Valyrian Apocalypse, chose Dragonstone to build an empire. Fire & Blood begins with the legend of Aegon the Conqueror, founder of the Iron Throne, and continues with other generations of Targaryens. However, civil war almost ruined their reign.”

Those who direct

Emmy Award-winning director Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones) and Ryan Condal (Colony) will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside writers Martin and Vince Gerardis. Sapochnik will produce the pilot episode and several other episodes, and Condal will pen the script.

Sapochnik received an Emmy Award in 2016 for Best Drama Series Directing for the episode Battle of the Bastards (Game of Thrones). Besides, he also won the 2019 Emmy with Martin, Gerardis, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and other producers for the Best Drama Series category with Game of Thrones’ final season.

Martin also introduced other contributors such as Wes Tooke (Colony), Claire Kiechel (The OA) and Ti Mikkel, assistant writer for Martin’s Fevre River Packet Company. He shared:

“Not even Aegon the Dragon could conquer the Seven Kingdoms on his own. He needs help from his two sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya. Ryan and I had some help too, and I want to share a little of the glory with the three young, talented, and hard-working writers who helped us get it done.”

Biggest contradiction

The Targaryen civil war took place mainly over the inheritance rights of the firstborn. Accordingly, kingship is usually given to the first-born child, usually the eldest son. Normally, the Targaryen family remains loyal to this inheritance law, but sometimes there are a few exceptions.

During the reign of King Viserys I, he appointed Rhaenyra, the daughter of his first wife, as his heir, but after his death, his eldest son Aegon, the son of his second wife, ascended the throne. pose a threat to the kingdom. At that time, Rhaenyra married his uncle Daemon Targaryen, who also planned to take the throne for himself.
