Friends Scripts from Ross’s London Wedding Sell for $28K at Auction After They Were Found in the Trash

Two scripts were recovered by a Fountain Studios in Wembley staffer after the cast filmed the episode — and were only rediscovered recently

Some Friends’ trash is another person’s treasure.

More than 25 years after the NBC sitcom first aired its season 4 finale, “The One with Ross’s Wedding,” two scripts that were dropped in the trash at the time have sold for $28,000 at auction. The BBC reports that the scripts, which featured the U.K.-set plot when Ross (David Schwimmer) married Emily (Helen Baxendale), were found in a garbage bin on site by a staff member at Fountain Studios in Wembley. They featured the now-iconic line where Ross said “I take thee, Rachel” at the altar, instead of the name of his actual bride.

No details on the buyer have been revealed, though they were listed as an “international” bidder. For Amanda Butler, head of operations at the auctioneer, the bidding experience was unlike anything she’s seen before. “I just can’t believe the result and the impact this find has had,” she told BBC. “Bidders went crazy for these scripts.”

The London episodes were also when Friends love story began between Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing and Courteney Cox’s Monica Geller. News of the sale of the scripts comes as the stars of Friends continue to cope with the sudden death of Perry on Oct. 28 at age 54.

Schwimmer, Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow reunited to celebrate Perry’s life at his funeral in early November after issuing a joint statement to PEOPLE: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

At Sunday’s 2024 Critics’ Choice Awards in Santa Monica, California, Aniston told Entertainment Tonight that fans can honor Perry’s legacy by continuing to “celebrate him.”
