Hit Sitcom Makes Global Netflix Top 10 After 15M Hours Viewed In Just 3 Days

A hit network sitcom lands at No. 6 on the Netflix English-language television Top 10 chart after racking up 15 million viewing hours in three days.

Young Sheldon has become a Netflix hit. The CBS sitcom is a prequel to the long-running smash hit The Big Bang Theory and follows the adventures of Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage), the character played as an adult on the original show by Jim Parsons, who provides voiceover narration for the show. The ensemble cast of the spinoff, which has run for a total of 6 seasons and 127 episodes at the time of writing, also includes Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, Annie Potts, and Emily Osment.

Netflix has now calculated their Top 10 most-viewed English-language shows for the week of November 20 through November 26. Season 1 of the Big Bang Theory spinoff has claimed the No. 6 spot on the chart thanks to 2.1 million views accumulating a total of 15 million viewing hours in the three days since the show arrived on the platform, just a few months ahead of the CBS premiere of Young Sheldon season 7, the show’s final season. The sitcom is one of only two acquired shows on the chart this week, with the other being BET+’s First Wives Club.

Could This Netflix Success Change Young Sheldon’s Fate?

Young Sheldon‘s Netflix success is astonishing, especially considering the fact that the record-shattering acquired hit Suits pulled 3 million viewers in its first week on the chart. While Young Sheldon‘s number is lower, the sitcom has less novelty as it is still running, as opposed to Suits, which went off the air in 2019. If its numbers continue to rise on Netflix, it’s possible that CBS could reverse their decision to end the show with the upcoming season 7.

However, there are many factors involved in the decision to end the sitcom, including the age of the Young Sheldon cast. There is only so much story left to be told in the show, as the timeline of the sitcom is catching up to the canonical point where Sheldon leaves his family home to attend CalTech in Pasadena. Even if the show were to consider stretching out his final year in college into multiple seasons, the now 15-year-old Armitage would quickly age out of being able to convincingly play a young Sheldon Cooper.

Even though Young Sheldon is ending, there is another Big Bang Theory spinoff in the works. Depending on when that in-development show ends up taking place in the timeline, certain characters may still be able to return. This would be one way for CBS to capitalize on the show’s newfound streaming success without jeopardizing their current plan for its ending.
