Jennifer Aniston reveals why the Friends reunion hasn’t happened
Jennifer Aniston has revealed the real reason a Friends reunion is not happening — the male stars are putting a stop to it.
Aniston, who played Rachel Green on the hit show, previously said she did not want to take part in a reboot, reports The Sun.
However, during an appearance on The Late, Late Show with James Corden, Aniston confirmed there would be no comeback, despite her now being open to the idea.
The girls say we would always love to do it again and the boys are a little less excited about it for some reason,” she told Corden.
“And so, we’ve decided that we’ll just do a remake of The Golden Girls in 40 years …
“What if we’re Rachel, Phoebe and Monica as, just, Golden Girls?”
Friends director Kevin S. Bright was in talks with the cast about bringing them back to film together again earlier this year but they couldn’t all come to an agreement.
“A group of 50-year-olds hanging out in a coffee shop would be pathetic,” he told Metro.
“If we did come back it would be the same characters but it wouldn’t be the same show.
“They’re at different places in their lives, potentially divorces, and so we just feel like letting them go off into the sunset is one of the things which keeps them going in people’s minds.
“Wondering what they do, did the marriage last and what did the kids grow up to be like. I think that’s best left to the audience.”
Interestingly, Aniston has been the one cast member with the biggest film profile but who has always seemed open to returning to Central Perk.
Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres about a reunion in 2017, the star said, “Anything is a possibility, Ellen. Anything, right? I mean, George Clooney got married.”
Lisa Kudrow, however, hasn’t been as enthusiastic, telling Conan O’Brien this year: “They’re rebooting everything. But I don’t know — how does that work with Friends, though?
“That was about people in their 20s, 30s. The show isn’t about people in their 40s, 50s. And if we have the same problems, then that’s just sad. That’s not fun.”
Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing, said in 2016 that a reunion could “ruin” the show after it ended “so well.”
“That’s the concern about doing a reunion show or a movie because it ended so well and you don’t want to ruin that. Everybody always asks about a reunion and there’s been no real talk of it.”
Friends ended in 2004 after a staggeringly successful 10-year run. It also gave Aniston, Courteney Cox and Kudrow the title of the highest paid actresses on TV at the time.
