Steve Carell Won’t Do The Office Again, but He Would Revisit Anchorman

Fans of The Office have sounded Hollywood’s reboot siren long and hard, especially in the last few months—and have managed to make a little bit of headway. John Krasinski, who crossed over to the big-screen promised land long ago, said he would “so be down” for a reboot. Rainn Wilson said he would do it if “the circumstances were right.” Jenna Fischer said she “would be honored to come back” should a reboot ever come to fruition. A whole bunch of supporting cast members even got together for a heartwarming reunion brunch earlier this month.

Whether all these actors actually want to make more of The Office—or if they’re just paying lip service to hopeful fans—is anyone’s guess. It can at least be said, though, that they all seem amenable to the idea.

And then there’s Steve Carell. The erstwhile Michael Scott has said, in no uncertain terms, that he’s not interested in doing a reboot. He’s said it in interviews, and on Saturday Night Live during a mini-Office reunion. He’s not interested; he’s moved on; it’s not him, it’s you; et cetera, et cetera. However, there is one old Carell character he would happily revisit if the opportunity presented itself: Brick “I Love Lamp” Tamland, his dumb-as-rocks character from the Anchorman films.

“If they make another one, I’ll do another one,” Carell recently told Variety. “Those are really fun. That’s just hanging out with friends and being silly.”

Twist the knife a little more, Carell! One could argue that the environment of The Office can also be characterized as “hanging out with friends and being silly”—unless, perhaps, everyone on The Office is Carell’s enemy. Or maybe the legendarily grueling pace of shooting a sitcom, especially when you’re the lead character, doesn’t quite lend itself to as much fun as doing a handful of scenes in a big-budget movie.

Carell added that he would also be happy to guest on the upcoming Ron Burgundy Podcast, hosted by Anchorman star Will Ferrell.

“Sure, if he wants me to come in and say some non sequiturs as Brick, of course. I would in a second,” Carell said.
