Fuller House’s Candace Cameron-Bure reveals that it hasn’t been discussed how Lori Loughlin’s firing will be handled in the final season. The actress behind Aunt Becky and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, reportedly paid half a million dollars to get their two kids into USC either by faking athletic records or cheating their SAT scores. Following the scandal, Hallmark dropped Loughlin from the show When Calls the Heart, and not long after that, Netflix decided to follow suit.
Renewed for its fifth and final season earlier this year, Fuller House centers around Cameron-Bure’s DJ as she raises her three kids as a single parent – a clear parallel with her father, Danny Tanner, in Full House. Her sister, Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and best friend, Kimmy (Andrea Barber) are main players, taking on similar roles as Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) and Joey (Dave Coulier). Meanwhile, the older cast of the original series drops by from time to time to check on the “kids” who still live in the Tanner family home. That includes Aunt Becky, who has a new adopted daughter with Uncle Jesse, Pamela. Fans, however, will have to make do of Fuller House’s final season without her. As to how that plays out in the upcoming 18 episodes, that’s still up in the air – at least according to Cameron-Bure.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at iHeartRadio’s 102.7 KIIS-FM Wango Tango concert, the actress expressed her excitement over coming back to work for Fuller House’s last season, saying it’s been emotional for her. She was also asked how the series will explain Aunt Becky’s absence and apparently, “it hasn’t been discussed.” The actress continues: “I have absolutely no answer for it, and Netflix has not even spoken about it, so I have no answer.” What’s interesting here, though is, she also says that she knows how it’s going to end, even teasing a potential wedding for DJ and Steve.
Part of the core cast of Fuller House’s parent series from the late 1980s and early 1990s, Loughlin is popular among fans of the franchise due to her chemistry with Uncle Jesse. A couple of episodes in the spinoff were even dedicated to them and the current status of their relationship. By the end of season 4, the older cast has decided to move back to San Francisco, with Danny and Becky even nabbing their old jobs hosting Wake Up, San Francisco. Given this, it’s safe to say that Netflix was planning on seeing them more interact with their contemporaries, especially with Stephanie having a new baby. This obviously makes it much more difficult to explain Becky’s absence in the final season of Fuller House. At the same time, since it’s the final year, they don’t need to think long-term when tackling her situation.
There’s a good chance that Cameron-Bure at least has an idea how Fuller House will write out Becky, since it seems like the show’s 18-episode season has been mapped out with the ending already decided. Despite this, it’s understandable why she doesn’t want to talk about this sensitive issue and the quicker way to get out of the conversation is to say she doesn’t know anything. She already received a considerable amount of criticism when she commented on the matter, so it makes sense she doesn’t want to go through the same thing again.
