365 explains how they filmed those steamy love scenes

Netflix subscribers don’t quite know what to do with 365 Dni, a Polish TV series that caused a stir online for its countless sex scenes between a crime boss and the woman he held hostage, for she 365 days to love him.

Also known simply as 365 Days, the film has recently caused some significant controversy because, frankly, it makes Fifty Shades of Gray look like a PG movie. Yes, the love scenes are so intense and unique that many people wonder how they filmed them.

Well, speaking to Variety in a recent interview, cinematographer Bartek Cierlica opened up on that very topic. When asked about the BDSM scene in particular, Cierlica had the following to say:

Every sex scene in this movie is different. Relationships develop. It starts with fear of the unknown and temptation. It develops through pure sex with BDSM and ends with love. The main idea is to create a growing tension between the two heroes starting from their first meeting. We wanted the viewer to participate in the game that Laura tries to play with Massimo and explore her sexuality and sensuality with her.

Variety also asked about the general strategy behind scenes like this and Cierlica said:

We wanted the camera to be as invisible as possible so they could act, so the filming time was really, really long. We create the most intimate atmosphere possible for the actors. We have reduced the number of staff on site to a minimum. Since it was handheld, I followed their actions and tried to show their passion in a natural yet beautiful way. We wanted this gender to be quite realistic. We wanted the viewer to hear their whispers, their heavy breathing, and we wanted to show their sweat, their passion. Be natural, authentic, but don’t cross the line into pornography.

Regarding the conversation between the cinematographer and director Barbara Białowąs, Cierlica shared the following:

We talked a lot with both directors – Barbara Białowąs and Tomasz Mandes. We had a few important goals. We didn’t want to create pornography, but at the same time, we wanted to do justice to a book that is filled with very intimate and passionate sexual descriptions. I know that as a DP, I am walking on very thin ice. It’s always a big challenge when you have to bring to life a story that people know and have their ideas about. Here the challenge was twofold – how to make it seductive and erotic within the boundaries of my general aesthetic and taste.

When I first started getting to know them, I seemed distant and objective when describing their relationship, but the more intense it became, the more I became immersed in their emotions, passion, and facial expressions.

Those are definitely some interesting insights there and no doubt fans will appreciate getting some idea of what goes into making a movie like this. This is probably unlike anything American audiences have seen before. Like we said above, Fifty Shades has nothing in it. At least when it comes to love scenes.

Believe it or not, 365 Dni really makes Fifty Shades look like an Oscar winner when it comes to plot and writing, even the acting. But of course, no one turns on 365 Dni and expects a stellar script and impressive performances. And if that’s the case, then they definitely chose the wrong movie to watch.
