The beloved sitcom ‘The Nanny’ is getting its very own fashion exhibition to showcase Fran Drescher’s character, Fran Fine’s colorful and campy designer wardrobe
She’s the lady in red while everybody else is wearing tan! From her trademark laugh and hysterical hijinks, no one could forget the character Fran Fine’s signature standout styles on the ’90s sitcom, The Nanny. They were colorful, they were campy, and they were full of designer finds from Thierry Mugler, Moschino, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana to name a few.
Now, pieces from The Nanny’s exemplary costume array will be showcased at the Tripostal art gallery in Lille, France, as part of the Series Mania festival. The Nanny Exhibit, curated by Chris Brempel, Clara Haseloff, and Marina Sacco, was created to “bring back the happiness and the joy that this show and the costumes have brought to the people around the world,” the website states.
Not going to Lille anytime soon? The exhibition is going to be hitting “many cities,” the official Instagram account says, while urging fans to “stay tuned.” (The show was supposed to originally debut in New York in 2020, but the opening was canceled due to COVID-19.)
Starring as Fran Fine throughout the series’ six seasons spanning from 1993-1999, Fran Drescher appears via video on Instagram, addressing showgoers, “Hi, I’m Fran Drescher! Welcome to The Nanny exhibition!”
According to the website, hundreds of haute couture and ready-to-wear clothing and accessories from the 1980s and 1990s will be on display, including “iconic looks” from Moschino, Todd Oldham, Christian Lacroix that were seen on the show.
Thanks to Emmy-winning costume designer Brenda Cooper, these memorable fashions are permanently imprinted in the minds of those who grew up watching “the flashy girl from Flushing,” as the theme song rings.
Providing a helping hand to the curators, Cooper chatted about her experience and her methodology behind crafting Fine’s unique style alongside fellow costume designers Shawn Holly Cookson and Terry Gordon, on Instagram and in video included within the show.
With Instagram accounts dedicated to identifying The Nanny’s designer outfits, the standout styles have stood the test of time. (Accounts like @whatfranwore curated by Shan Brown have racked up a dedicated following of 360,000.)
Seeing an uptick in renewed interest, Drescher has been rewearing a few favorites from the show, donning the rainbow stripped Moschino vest in an Instagram post last year.
