Although it is preparing to debut on Valentine’s Day 2015, the blockbuster “Fifty Shades of Gray” has not revealed much information to fans.
Fans of the original Fifty Shades of Gray have only been updated about the film adaptation through two short trailers, photos on the director’s Instagram and some paparazzi images from the film’s set. The film’s cast appeared to be extremely tight-lipped and information only trickled in from director Sam Taylor-Johnson and the writer of the original, E. L. James.
Although the setting in the original novel is Seattle, the film was made in Vancouver, Canada. The filming period from December 2013 to February 2014 was a real challenge for the film crew because the temperature here dropped very low. There was even a time when the producers considered changing the entire filming location of Fifty Shades of Gray because of the weather.
However, the original plan ultimately remained the same. Through two trailers, the expected settings such as the hardware store where Anastasia works part-time to billionaire Gray’s Red Room have all appeared. Paparazzi images show the two main characters having a date at a cafe to learn more about each other. Besides, there are also some pictures of actors Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson appearing in front of the headquarters of Gray Group headed by billionaire Christian Gray.
One of the scenes that caused the film crew the most headaches was when the two characters were in a shower. The difficulty did not come from creating the rain but from the residents in the filming area. A resident there even took a cow bell to ring it near the studio and interrupted the filming process. Ultimately, the film crew was forced to change the filming location for this scene.
The difficulties for Fifty Shades of Gray did not only come from the studio but also behind the scenes. Rumors say that there were certain disagreements between writer E. L. James and director Sam Taylor-Johnson. While James insisted that the film follow her novel as closely as possible, director Taylor-Johnson was extremely uncomfortable with the script revisions. An insider source said: “E. L. James wanted the film to be exactly like the novel, but Sam had a different vision. The female director reminded E. L. that she was the one who wrote the book, and Sam was the filmmaker. This causes tension between the two of them.”
In the original literary work, the bed scenes between the two main characters are described very clearly and violently. However, this becomes another difficulty for director Sam Taylor-Johnson and producer Michael DeLuca when they have to find a balance, helping the movie to only be rated R and not NC-17. (ie completely prohibited for children under 17 years old.
Fifty Shades of Gray originally wrapped filming in February and then went through the editing process. However, recently Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson had to return to Vancouver to film some more scenes. In October, the two were caught having romantic scenes in three different locations. This made some people suspect that these were reshoots due to the two actors’ lack of previous chemistry. However, most people think that they are simply performing additional scenes.
